SOCIAL ACTION

My family and I support NACOEJ (the North American Conference of Ethiopian Jewry ), Beit Issie Shaprio, an institute for developmentally disabled children in Israel, and the American Anti-Slavery group.

In addition, my family and I endow the ONCE UPON A WORLD CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD, which is administered by the Simon Wiesenthal Center Library. The award carries a $1,000.00 prize.
Along with the award presentation, we sponsor a day long seminar called WRITE TO TOLERANCE, with workshops for teachers, librarians, writers and others who want to become involved in our mission: advocating and educating others toward tolerance.

I am a member of the Library of California Board appointed by Governor Davis.

My book DREAM FREEDOM is dedicated to Barbara Vogel, a wonderful teacher who, with her 4th and 5th graders, organized the STOP campaign in Colorado and beyond. I have been honored to work with Barbara and her school kids in the STOP campaign. This photograph shows all of us in Washington D.C., where we went to speak to member of congress about the plight of the southern people of Sudan.
